Back from Scotland

can I just say

Thank GOD for Lady V. 2 hours ago, depressed and shattered, 72 hours of headache a clear sign of my impending decision. And now here we are, listening to Regina, totally pissed. gin and tonic. we can all do with a little top up, of gin and acid and whatever we can get our hands on. Top totty I say. And thank heavens for wireless, that's all I can say!

Just felt the need to blog this moment.

On the move. Again.

Going to Edinburgh tomorrow morning.
Thom's concert tomorrow evening.
Blood flows with little sparks of excitement.
It's been over two years.
Too long.
Far too long.

We Love the Decemberists

I can't remember who was the first person to mention the Decemberists in my presence. Someone who knew my musical tastes well, of course. Now it feels like I've always known them, although I only became acquainted with their music quite recently. It barely took me an hour to fall in love with this extraordinary ensemble, with their lush sound, a mixture of guitars, horns, violins, accordions and more, above which towers the voice of Colin Meloy, reminding me of Belle and Sebastian's Stuart Murdoch. They tell us that since their debut "[...] their sound has undergone a consistent evolution, most notably in the direction of progressive rock with a strong folk influence". This makes them one of the most interesting indie bands coming out of the US in recent times.

Although the birthplace of the 5 members of the band is known - Portland, Oregon - how they came to be is somewhat a matter of debate. On their website they tell us that they met in a Turkish bath, where they revealed their lives to one another between sips of a strange, tangerine liqueur. Further on, they tell us: "[...] One can surmise all one wants, but the truth should be known that, after adopting the moniker The Decemberists, these five wan vagabonds began playing their peculiarly styled pop music in various concert-halls and brothels all across the globe". Indeed, a sense of thatrical nostalgia infuses not just their biography, but most of their lyrics, echoed in such titles as Shanty for the Arethusa, The Legionnaire's Lament and The Bagman's Gambit. Three of their songs - The Engine Driver from Picaresque, The Soldiering Life from Her Majesty The Decemberists and Here I Dreamt I Was An Architect from Castaways & Cutouts - are available from their record label's website, Kill Rock Stars.

So thanks to the Decemberists for keeping the flame of indie rock alive. Still, one question remains unanswered: why the wrong spelling?!?!

Hills. Clouds. Storms.

and more of the Prince...

The obsession grows...

Hels and Hooky's wedding

Heavy-headed, returning from Hels and Hooky's wedding. A strange sense of deja-vu as I think back to my half-drunken stumble across perfectly manicured lawns, surrounded by well-behaved 30somethings. Hels and Hooky... when you say a perfect couple. Fabulously beautiful. Madly in love with each other. I almost cried (with envy, of course!)...

On a lighter note, here are some of my favourite wedding moments.

FM 1
as Hels and Hooky dig a hole to plant a tree symbolising... er... something about love, blah blah blah...:
M.: Oh sweet, they're planting a tree
A.: Yeah, if they dig a bigger hole, they could bury that old granny too.

FM 2
after lengthy conversation over dinner about cooking and eating with a 30something woman who works as a food-critic for a London magazine:
W.: So tell me a memorable meal you had...
A.: Well, about a year ago, at Caino's in Montemerano, near Manciano. Ravioli stuffed with extra-virgin olive oil and garlic sorbet the two most memorable dishes. Exquisite food. What about you?
W.: Oh, south of France, a few years ago...
A.: ...
W.: Yes... well... can't remember the name of the restaurant, but it was fabulous...
A.: What did you eat?
W.: Oh, oysters, lobster, these kind of things... Marvellous
A.: flabbergasted silence
W.: pointless silence
A.: What is it again you do!?!?!
woman turns to person on her right and doesn't speak to me for the rest of the evening...

FM 3
conversing with W & J about embarassing moments with family members:
J.: So after some time we've been going out together, W decides to introduce me to his father and his new wife.
A.: How sweet of him...
J.: Yes, except that his new wife is this Philipino woman 20 years younger, and as I walked into the house, evidently unable to face the gruelling prospect of meeting his son's new girlfriend, he had invited half a dozen of his mates, who ALL had a Philipino wife 20 years younger...
embarassed silence follows as W shifts uneasily from his right foot to his left foot and back...

FM 4
on arrival at the sumptuous Premier Travel Inn:

FM 5
Best man S is giving his speech:
S.: And here are some telegrams from friends who could not be here today, but still wanted to wish Hels and Hooky all the best. One friend describing himself simply as Bones says he's sorry he couldn't be here today to help you relax...
probably the best line of the speech, strangely the parents and old grannie didn't quite get the joke.

FM 6
Piggy back race. Several fathers have decided to enter the race with their young kids, as a lower weight on their back will enhance the chances of them winning. The race starts. Most fathers run like they're competing for an Olympic medal. The faces of the children on their backs are paralysed with terror. One kid looses his balance and flips backwards, dangling by his anckles against the father's back. Possible spinal fracture. Father doesn't stop running until he reaches the finish line. Kid at this point is in tears and possibly scarred for life. Good old English competitiveness...

FM 7
Watching another gruelling race and conversing with N., 30something single mother of a little mixed-race boy, the product of a one-night stand in the Philippines:
N.: They really should let Helen win, after all it's her wedding day...
A.: Oh well, yes, but she's already won a husband today, which is more than some women can claim here!
N.: Flabbergasted silence
A.: Mortified silence
N.: [leaving] I better go and check my son.

Yes, we gave good wedding. Once more...

The Return of the Queen

Yes, my only entry about this long Tuscan break is for you, my truly loyal, ravishingly beautiful, incredibly talented, awfully funny, endearingly clumsy, top-totty travel companion: Lady Caterina Vestibule of the Great Northern Lakes.

Words cannot describe the pleasure of waking up to your smile every day, and of stumbling to bed a little too intoxicated by your side every night. Just a handful of unforgettable memories. The acid madness. The glorious sunsets. The endless baking and cooking for the ever-present armies of fabulous friends. The Rufus and Bonnie Prince Billy playing in the background. The Buffy nights with cheese and bakes. The making and unmaking of beds. The taming of waves on wobbly dingies. The noise of hoes digging the ground. The sight of your painted toes as I drove up and down the Tuscan hills. And of course, the rows of empty bottles of red wine...

So here's to you, a big thank you for making this the most amazing holiday of my life.

packing done!

passport? check! tickets? check! huge amount of luggage including a badly folded racing bike? CHECK!!!

Oh, and Michael: the pink fallic object is not a gay banner. It's a kite (although, admittedly, rainbow-coloured...)!

Red rucksack in the bottom corner, containing the bare essentials: CDs, i-Pod, a piggy bank full of euro change after 4 years of fruitless trips to Brussels, sun-cream, spare inner tube for the bike.

YEY!!!!

My summer reading list

First, two books I've been wanting to read for ages, but never got round to, about networks and social change:

Then, a couple of books from my MSc preliminary reading list, to get my brain moving...

Finally, some light reading for the warm evenings under the oak tree drinking gin and tonic... yuk!

All in one month. You bet...

the departure is nigh

overpacking? I think not...

The final

Some images from Sunday's final, now that I have recovered from the humonguous hangover and can actually push the right buttons to upload the pictures...

Annalisa's primal scream at the final penalty...

Heidi and Cath are definitely discussing the off side rule. But Molly, when will you learn to look at the match instead of planning your social life?!?!

Beth cannot believe they gave France that penalty

An Omen...

On 25th February 2006 Italy won the 5th Annual Mighty Mite World Championships, beating host favourites the United States, as well as Austria, France, Australia and Switzerland. Joining their event were members of the Mammoth Mountain Mighty 5 team who carried the national signs, members of the Disabled Sports Eastern Sierra and, making a guest appearance, Ski Patrol dog King and his partner Sean Macedonio. To the delight of spectators and participants, King, sitting in a special adapted sled, let out a deep bark with each turn.

Team Italy was the second group to attack the course with Brianna Andreas posting the top time for the team. Andreas was also the fastest girl in the 1998 girls division. Sierra Rutherford, who won the Girl's 1997 class, had the second fastest time for the team. Their times along with Steven Stickells' time of 28.21 helped Team Italy capture first place in the overall team competition.

Surely an omen of things to come...

Odyssey XXIII

Then Ulysses in his turn melted,
and wept as he clasped his dear
and faithful wife to his bosom.

As the sight of land is welcome to men
who are swimming towards the shore,
when Neptune has wrecked their ship
with the fury of his winds and waves-

a few alone reach the land, and these,
covered with brine, are thankful
when they find themselves
on firm ground and out of danger-

even so was her husband welcome to her
as she looked upon him, and she could not tear
her two fair arms from about his neck.

Indeed they would have gone on indulging
their sorrow till rosy-fingered morn appeared,
had not Minerva determined otherwise,
and held night back in the far west,

while she would not suffer Dawn to leave Oceanus,
nor to yoke the two steeds Lampus
and Phaethon that bear her onward
to break the day upon mankind.

7/7

I know for most people in London today will always and only bring back the dark memories of that fateful morning of a year ago, when the tube and streets echoed with the explosions of those bombs.

For me, however, today is a day of light and renewed faith in humanity, as a long period of angst and pain finally comes to an end thanks to 2 words uttered by an middle-aged woman in Winchester. Not guilty. The lies have been uncovered. The truth brought to justice.

Now let us drink and celebrate, because the tyrant is dead, and the king has returned to his throne.

Palermo

How should I start recounting
that strange pulse of the ground
the eerie silence
in and around the crumbling stones?

There is no future in Palermo

Only the glory of the past
and the silent mourning
of the present

This land is cursed
blessed
raped
loved

On the very last night I met an artist
from Austria
he had fallen into the city's womb
and never managed to crawl out of it

He built this

by the Vucciria
the French Boucherie
distorted and despised
the raw guts hanging
under the plastic cross

I fell in love with him and with his city
there and then
angry that such beauty should rot
under the unforgiving sun of the Mediterranean

and then realising that there is no future
anyway

sic transit gloria mundi

so let them rot
the stones
and the palaces
and the artist
and the people
and the sun
and the moon
and the sea

because this rotten smell is beautiful
