Materazzi could have insulted 15 generations of his family, or called him names that would have made Dick Cheney blush, still he behaved like a lunatic. We should not forget these are footballers, not damoiselles, they are well used to rough talk on the pitch. And let us not foget Zidane isn't new to headbutting, he did it with Saudi Arabia, and also while playing with Juventus a few years ago. What infuriates me today is that he was welcomed in France as a national hero, awarded the Golden Ball, while everyone else murmurs about Materazzi's terrible insult. Far from being celebrated for winning the World Cup, Italy has somehow become the nation that's really guilty. While the attention of the sports media should be focusing on the winning team, all you read about is Zizou's senseless act. It makes me angry, because for the first time Italy didn't play the Italian way, faking injuries, pulling the "catenaccio" when they scored a goal. For the first time, here was something to be proud of, something our country needs so badly. And here comes Zizou, with his god-like aura, and spreads mud all over what should have been a clean page of Italian history. Well thanks, Zidane. Whatever caused the offence, you made sure the response spoilt the fun for all of us.

And Materazzi didn't say terrorist and even if he did. Even if he insulted his mum dad sister and wife(???) at his age hasn't he learnt to cope with reality??

actually, sic, you have a point there... only a closeted gay man would react in that manner to a verbal insult insinuating he likes it up the back passage...!
and for the record, just had an argument with the french guy who makes pancakes down the road, who brought up the subject of the world cup (i am too polite and don't like to gloat) only to let me know he would have done the same to someone insulting his sister. to my observations that physical violence just isn't an acceptable way to respond to an insult, especially on a football pitch in front of 2 bn viewers, he started becoming agressive towards me!
now, thanks to mr zizou, the whole of france thinks it's perfecly normal to headbutt someone if he dares insult the family. hey? wasn't that an italian cultural trait, over-reacting when they touch la famiglia? give us back the Monalisa!!!!
