For those of you who don't know Frenchman Pascal Arbez aka Vitalic, he's one of the most talented Frenchmen to conquer and inspire Europe since Napoleon Bonaparte. When his debut four-song ‘Poney EP’ was first released in late 2001, he tore through dancefloors, just as Fischerspooner fever and electroclash madness were spreading across the continent. Last year, he released his long-awaited debut album, ’OK Cowboy’, which Vitalic describes the album as a mix of “dance music, experimental, organs and French music”. In fact, it's much more than that: the Windish Agency describes Vitalic's sound as the ultimate rush, the greatest high, the invincible metal disco warrior.
Now, this collective of French directors called Pleix (who did Basement Jaxx's Cish Cash and are absolute geniuses) produced this fantastic video of flying dogs to the exhilarating beat of Poney Part I. Unmissable! En passant, these guys came up with some other amazing stuff, of which my absolute favourite has to be this one...
Meanwhile, on the northern side of France (actually Belgium, it's the Netherlands to be precise), I came across the Kilimanjaro Darkjazz Ensemble, which describes itself as "a weird combination of the organic and the mechanic. Contrary to technophobes' beliefs that a soul has no machine. Jason Kohnen and Gideon Kiers started T.K.D.E. around 2000, principally as an audio/visual project remixing old movie classics like Murnau's Nosferatu or Lang's Metropolis, leading to a natural progression into producing this clash of organic and mechanic. Kiers is better known for his work with Telcosystems and Jason Kohnen as Bong-Ra". All brilliantly weird. You can listen to some of their amazing stuff here, here and here.
